Mr. Wilkins is a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and a 1996 graduate of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He received his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999.

W. Walter Wilkins was appointed United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina by President Bush on May 7, 2008, and confirmed by the Senate on June 5, 2008, as the 49th United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina. In that capacity, Mr. Wilkins served as the chief federal prosecutor for the State of South Carolina and chairman of the district's Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee until January 10th, 2010.

Mr. Wilkins has worked as an attorney with Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina, and with the Greenville-based firm of Leatherwood, Walker, Todd & Mann, PC. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Greenville Technical College. Prior to becoming the U.S. Attorney, Mr. Wilkins served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Greenville office, and handled several noteworthy cases, including one of the largest mortgage fraud cases in the district, a large-scale gambling operation which resulted in one of the largest forfeiture cases in the upstate, and a high-profile human trafficking case.

Mr. Wilkins received the United States Attorney's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Asset Forfeiture Program in 2007; the United States Attorney's Award for Outstanding Prosecution in 2006, the United States Secret Service Award for Outstanding Prosecution in 2006, Young Lawyer of the Year Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates in 2003.

Mr. Wilkins was elected Solicitor of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit in November, 2010 and was sworn in for a four year term on January 12, 2011.

Mr. Wilkins is married and has two children.
